Job Description

The Research and Development Chemist II is a seasoned formulator who blends deep technical expertise with creativity to develop a wide range of personal care, cosmetic, and OTC products such as sunscreens and anti-acne treatments from concept to launch. This role involves identifying market gaps across brands and crafting innovative solutions tailored to customer specifications. Strong leadership and communication skills are essential for collaboration across internal teams and with external clients.

Responsibilities

- Lead formulation projects from concept through completion with minimal oversight.

- Resolve formulation and scale-up challenges independently.

- Serve as a technical liaison with customers, addressing regulatory and performance-related topics.

- Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards in product development.

- Identify cost-saving opportunities through raw material optimization.

- Oversee scale-up processes and define critical manufacturing parameters.

- Troubleshoot production issues and manage batch inconsistencies.

- Establish product specifications and author compounding procedures.

- Supervise pilot batch production and coordinate lab activities.

- Submit documentation for new formulas and raw materials to operations and QC.

- Conduct raw material research and vendor evaluations.

- Draft and review ingredient lists, QQs, and packaging artwork.

- Analyze lab results, assess risks, and communicate findings to stakeholders.

- Stay informed on market trends and emerging formulation technologies.

- Mentor and train lab personnel.

- Perform additional duties as needed.

- Experience managing external vendors and ensuring performance standards.

- Demonstrated leadership and cross-functional teamwork abilities.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

- Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 8+ years of formulation experience.

- OR an advanced degree with 6+ years of relevant experience.

- Preferred: Masters or PhD in a related field.

- 10+ years of experience in personal care product formulation.

Work Environment

This role operates in a GMP laboratory, providing a dynamic and growth-oriented environment. The laboratory is focused on advancing personal care formulations with adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
