"Position Overview

General Function:

Skilled work in the operation of heavy and complex solid waste collection equipment. Work involves the operation of equipment of complex difficulty requiring considerable proficiency, training, and ability. Must use field knowledge in setup, observance of surroundings, and the operation of key items of equipment.

Work is performed under general supervision; the employee must have the ability to use independent judgment in the completion of assigned duties. Performance is evaluated through observation of results obtained and occasionally while work is in progress.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


• Responsible for collecting and loading recyclable material along a designated route.

• Transporting material to the dump area and returning to complete the route.

• May be required to load recyclable material by hand in accordance with prescribed procedures and may be required to separate recyclable material at customer drop-off locations or curbside.

• Cross-train as scheduled.

• Performs a variety of skilled tasks using equipment with mechanical controls, requiring proficiency and ability.

• Safely operates the vehicle and equipment according to prescribed safety procedures.

• Complies with Florida Department of Highway Safety Motor Vehicle rules and regulations.

• Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.

• Required to wash equipment as required.

• Prepares and maintains proper records as required.

• Assist other personnel in lifting heavy objects and learning access to properties.

• Prepares written reports of unusual occurrences on route, vehicle accidents, and personal injuries.

• Respond to customer inquiries in a professional manner.

• Prepares maintenance reports indicating deficiencies noted in vehicle operation.

• Collection of shopping carts as required.

• Collection of dead animals as required (backup to Code Enforcement) and disposal of same in a proper manner.

• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Type of Appointment/Work hours:

• Full-time/Regular in-person position.

• Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day or four (4) days of ten (10) hours per day. The workday may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.

• Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

• Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.


Qualifications & Work Environment


Requirements:

• Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalency.

• One (1) year of related work experience is preferred.

• One (1) year of experience in the operation of solid waste equipment/vehicles is preferred, or the ability to learn within six (6) months is required.

• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in solid waste collection is required.

• Knowledge of the geographical makeup of the City limits is preferred.

• The nature of the job requires physical strength, coordination, and skill.

• Outside work under adverse weather conditions is required.

• Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions.

• Must hold a valid Florida Class “B” Driver’s license without restriction #1 and with a clean driving record.

• Must pass a background screening process.
