Job Description

General Summary

The SoMi District Ambassador is a “hybrid” position, requiring a unique blend of marketing expertise, strong interpersonal skills, and a commitment to community safety and engagement. Serves as liaison between the City, visitors, and the local business community, while also working closely with the City’s Police, Public Works, and Code Enforcement departments to ensure the overall well-being of the community.

Supervision Received & Exercised

The SoMi District Ambassador exercises no supervision and works under the general supervision of the Community Affairs Manager. This position is classified as a non-exempt, full-time position with a flexible work schedule and is expected to work some weekends and holidays.

Duties & Responsibilities

Community Liaison

 Acts as a primary point of contact between the City and the local business community, fostering positive relationships and partnerships.

 Attends community events, meetings, ribbon cuttings, and networking opportunities to represent the City’s brand and maintain visibility within the community.

 Leads outreach and coordination with local businesses, to host quarterly networking socials, manages on-site filming, editing, and set up.

 Recruit businesses to participate in campaigns and district initiatives such as Taste of SoMi, Scavenger Hunts, and other Community Affairs initiatives.

 Collaborates with community leaders, organizations, and stakeholders to identify opportunities for partnership.

Marketing & Content Creation

 Helps to develop and implement marketing strategies that promote the City’s products, services, and initiatives to the community and target audiences.

 Creates engaging content for various marketing initiatives, including social media, email campaigns, flyers, graphics, and print materials.

 Coordinates marketing campaigns and events to increase brand awareness and drive customer engagement to the SoMi District.

 Responsible for owning, recording, and editing the two business-driven initiatives called Shop SoMi and SoMi Spotlight, which are video series to promote our local businesses.

 Collaborate with Marketing Manager to gather content and edit the SoMi Insider Newsletter for publication.


Community Outreach, Events, and Engagement

 Organizes and executes community outreach programs, events, and initiatives to support the City’s business objectives and enhance its relationship with the community.

 Responds to inquiries and feedback from community members in a timely and professional manner, ensuring excellent customer service and satisfaction.

 Collaborates with internal teams to align community engagement efforts with the City’s overall business goals and objectives.

 Coordinates economic development programs to help businesses learn about different tools and programs available to enhance their business presence.

Additional Responsibilities

 Works cooperatively as additional eyes and ears for the City of South Miami’s Police, Public Works, and Code Enforcement Departments.

 Provides directions, wayfinding, and parking information for SoMi District visitors.

 Reports incidents, code compliance violations, solid waste issues, and other concerns to the City.

 Visits and maintains relationships with SoMi District business owners and managers to share information and report feedback and concerns.

 Responds to calls concerning specific incidents (suspicious persons, graffiti, panhandling, litter) and alerts the appropriate parties.

 Provides feedback from the SoMi District businesses to the Town Center Advisory Board.

 This position plays a vital role in enhancing the vibrancy and safety of our SoMi District, fostering a sense of community pride and engagement.

 Performs other duties as needed or required by the Community Affairs Manager.

Minimum Qualifications Required

 Associates degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or Hospitality from an accredited college/university preferred.

 Minimum of one (1) year of related experience in marketing, community relations or any equivalent combination of related education and experience preferred.

 Proficient in digital marketing tools and platforms, including social media and graphic designing.

 Must be fluent in spoken and written English. Ability to communicate (speak, read and write) in Spanish preferred.

 Must possess a valid State of Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and clearance of the pre-employment background screening process.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

 Ability to communicate fluently and effectively in spoken and written English.

 Must be computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.

 Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, determining proper course of action.

 Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

 Ability to meet and deal with the public in a courteous, eloquent and effective manner.

 Ability to perform several tasks at one time.

 Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

 Ability to work evenings, weekends and some holidays, as required.

 Ability to maintain a high level of organization.

 Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters and exercise discretion.

 Ability to capture content and support social media efforts.

 Ability to support events and activation in our town center.

 Ability and responsibility to effectively work independently, exercise discretion and independent judgment, and maintain confidentiality and professionalism in the execution of duties.
