Job Description

"Position Overview

General Function:

Highly responsible technical work involving the electro/mechanical maintenance and repair of equipment utilized by an electric utility including substations, power plants, and other auxiliaries.

Work involves troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of complex electrical equipment at voltages up to and including 13.2 Kv. Includes the installation and repair of a variety of types of electrical equipment used in controlling, regulating, and measuring electrical power.

Work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisor with considerable latitude for the use of independent judgement in the selection of work methods and procedures. Work is evaluated based upon written and oral reports and through review of the effectiveness of plant and system operations.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


• Inspects generators, exciters, breakers, relays, transformers, voltage regulators, recorders and direct reading meters and control circuits for signs of possible trouble, diagnoses trouble and effects repair.

• Tests and initiates repair to electrical and electronic equipment; periodically calibrates relays and meters to ensure accuracy; issues accurate reports of electrical and electronic equipment condition. Installs electrical conduit, electrical pull boxes and pulls cable for new and existing projects.

• Maintains battery banks and D.C. charging and monitoring systems.

• Inspects and repairs generator connections, brushes, exciters and voltage regulators.

• Troubleshoots, installs and upgrades motor control centers, motor starters, switchgears, transformers, motor and motor controls, electrical distribution panels, circuit breakers, lighting systems and associated motor wiring as needed.

• Performs clearance cut outs and equipment isolation as outlined in clearance or tag out procedures.

• Performs routine maintenance and upkeep to assigned equipment to insure safe and efficient operation.

• Works closely to promote a team environment within the workforce and supervision in order to effectively solve problems encountered in the field.

• Ensures that all repairs are performed properly to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the equipment involved.

• Must be able to read blueprints; understand and use coding numbers of electrical system standards; use electrical and electronic test equipment.

• Responds to trouble calls and assists in power failure recovery as necessary to safely and rapidly recover from such failure.

• Maintains and safeguards assigned equipment.

• Performs work associated with potential and current transformer installations and maintenance.

• Assists with installation, adjustments, functionality tests, troubleshooting, repairs and/or overhauls for all types of electric meters and metering equipment in service on Homestead Energy Services Transmission, Substation, Distribution and Power Plant facilities.

• Performs other job-related duties as required by supervisors.

• Performs electrical maintenance and installation of City of Homestead equipment as assigned by supervisor.

Type of Appointment/Work hours:

• Full-time/Regular in-person position.

• Standard workweek, which is forty (40) hours of work per week usually consisting of five (5) days of eight (8) hours per day. The workday may be varied for the efficient delivery of public service.

• Will be required to work other than the standard workweek on occasion, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

• Will be required to work occasional overtime or shift assignments, if applicable.

• Designated an essential employee.


Qualifications & Work Environment


Requirements:

• Must have a high school diploma or its equivalency.

• Electrical training with State of Florida Journeyman Electrician License required.

• Two (2) years of Power Plant electrical experience is preferred.

• Able to work overtime and be subject to calls during emergencies.

• Knowledge of the repair, maintenance, and operation of electrical equipment normally found in utility and/or industrial applications.

• Able to pass an oral and written examination and expected to further knowledge through further education.

• Must be able to comprehend and follow written and verbal instructions.

• Must possess a valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record.

• Must pass a background screening process.
